My daughter Aitch wrote this guest post about Sombreros Mexican restaurant in Queenstown.
We were in Queenstown for my childhood best friend’s wedding in January this year. We were lucky to have beautiful weather while we were there. We were there for two nights, and of course one night we had dinner at the wedding venue. The other night, we went for a wander into Queenstown Centre to see what they had to offer in the way of something that would suit all four of us – one Coeliac, two semi-fussy eaters (Aitch and Em) and one who eats anything (English Em).
We walked through the streets, stopping at a few doors to peruse menus. Some did not have GF options marked at all. Some had GF options clearly marked, but only one or two options to choose from. Some looked OK but did not suit the 2 semi-fussy eaters.
We continued wandering, and went down a back street, only to find ‘Sombreros Mexican Restaurant’. I was extremely excited because I love Mexican, and knew there could potentially be GF options with some of the corn based breads/chips etc. We walked up the stairs to the restaurant, only to be met by smiling faces in Mexican Sombreros. We walked into the very authentic and fun looking restaurant (Mum with trepidation), and were seated at a lovely wooden table by the window.
Looking at the menu, there were no options obviously marked as GF. However, we asked the staff to point out the GF options, and they were extremely knowledgeable and were able to recommend dishes to Mum which were either totally GF, or could be made GF with a few adjustments. The two semi-fussy eaters were also happy, as was English Em, so we were all set.
All in all it was a great experience. We left the restaurant about 2 hours later, with bellies full of delicious Mexican food and cocktails (I recommend the Ult. Fruit Margarita).
Well done Sombreros Queenstown! We will surely be back when we are next in the area.
Nice work Aitch, I like all the colour and fun that Mexican restaurants often offer, will have to check out Sombreros next time we’re in Queenstown.
Great review! The latest Cuisine magazine just got delivered here, they have a section on Mexican
food, which looks delicious – could be something to try over the holiday time??
Thanks for your replies. Yes, definitely worth trying.
